Stuart believes that our homes and built environments should be:
· Beautifully unique, functional, and harmonious extensions of the natural environment.
· Healthy habitats that maintains and improves the quality of our lives – a place to thrive.
· Durable, long-lasting heirlooms that can be enjoyed for numerous generations.
Unsatisfied with conventional construction methods, Stuart is passionate and motivated to provide people with better buildings - superior and healthier homes to raise our families in, and better commercial spaces for people to work and interact in. He is committed to creating beautiful, functional works of structural art using natural, non-toxic, environmentally responsible materials.
Raised on a farm in rural Saskatchewan, he has a lifelong history in construction, though some of his earliest projects would not likely have passed building code. After obtaining a B.Sc. in Biology (and a Master’s degree in Socializing) from the University of Saskatchewan, Stuart spent many years traveling and living abroad.
During those travels he was introduced to sustainable building and became an avid researcher of alternative construction techniques. After many years of research, attending workshops, project builds, and experimentation, he concluded that earthen construction techniques were the way forward.
He was given the opportunity to put his knowledge and skills to the test when he was recruited to lead the construction of the massive rammed earth walls for a residence in Saskatoon. After successful completion of the project, rammed earth became his obsession.
Stuart continually seeks to develop his knowledge and skills in rammed earth construction techniques. With a keen focus on what is artistically possible with the use of pigments, accents, and intentional stratification designs, he is continually pushing the boundaries of rammed earth aesthetic design.
Stuart draws his creative inspiration from the stratified sedimentary layers found in nature’s sandstone formations, color palettes viewed randomly throughout day to day life, and from combining his imagination with good old-fashioned pencil crayons and paper.
Stuart brings a passionate, inspired approach to every project and thrives on pushing the envelope of what is possible with rammed earth. His goal with every project is to create a unique and stunning showpiece for the client that will stand the test of time…for a long time. He likes to quote one of his early mentors in earth building who joked that: “I only warranty my homes for the first 1000 years, so you better find me before then if you have any problems.”
With a background in finishing carpentry, Stuart’s attention to the fine details in form-work and mix design, combined with his integrity and uncompromising standards, result in a finished product that is second to none. He prides himself on being a craftsman and artist of rammed earth.
In his leisure time, he enjoys gardening, reading, cooking, snowboarding, biking, and spending time with his amazing wife and young son.
It was great to work with Stuart on the rammed earth for my house. He is smart, driven, and really paid attention to the details in making sure it was done right. We worked together through many challenging and groundbreaking aspects of my build, and Stuart led the team to achieve an outcome that surpassed my very high expectations.
I strongly recommend Stuart to help turn your rammed earth dreams into reality.
